Improving TCP Performance in Mobile Computing Environments

چکیده
In this paper we examine several aspects of performance and connection management during handoffs and interface switching in mobile computing environments. We demonstrate the insufficiency of network layer mobility protocols to preserve highperformance operation of reliable transport protocols such as TCP under certain circumstances. We also introduce a mobility-aware transport, Mobile TCP, that maintains robust operation despite lossy mobile activity. Experimental results are presented and discussed.

متن کاملATCP: Improving TCP performance over mobile wireless environments
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is known to suffer from performance degradation in mobile wireless environments. This is because such environments are prone to packet losses due to high bit error rates and mobility induced disconnections. TCP interprets packet losses as an indication of congestion and inappropriately invokes congestion control mechanisms, leading to degraded performance. Wh...

متن کاملImproving the Performance of Reliable Transport Protocols in Mobile Computing Environments
AbstructWe explore the performance of reliable data communication in mobile computing environments. Motion across wireless cell boundaries causes increased delays and packet losses while the network learns how to route data to a host’s new location. Reliable transport protocols like TCP interpret these delays and losses as signs of network congestion. They consequently throttle their transmissi...
